Asana, standing 6 metres tall, was built as the entrance way into the pavilion area for Art With Me festival in Tulum in 2019. Created as a temporary installation that later went on to be repurposed at Akalki resort in Bacalar.
The art piece is intended to pay homage to yoga as a pillar of practice within our lives. Attention to breath is key in any form of yoga practice. When moving through poses, or asanas, practitioners must be sure to focus on the rhythm of their breathing. Everything is done with and through the breath. Popper’s Asana is shown inhaling into the urdhva mukha svanasana (upwardsfacing dog) position.
Asana’s laced-wooden chest is open and reveals an interior spilling over with lush plants. Her inner landscape is as abundant as that which surrounds her.
