Standing ten metres tall in the desert, Reflections looks at first like a wandering figure lost in the landscape. Located in the Tankwa Karoo, this piece is a three-storey structure made from steel and untreated wood. On its lower level is a heart-shaped LED infinity mirror featuring simulations programmed by artist Justin Eastman.
Built for the 2013 edition of Afrikaburn, themed ‘archetypes’, this work is intended to spark thoughts about self, solitude and the image of man. Rather than referring to familiar images or archetypes of masculinity, Reflections proposes a new one: a lone listener, attentive to inner and outer worlds, attuned to the murmurs of their self and soul.
As the narrator in Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince says, “I have always loved the desert. One sits down on a desert sand dune, sees nothing, hears nothing. Yet through the silence, something throbs and gleams…” Reflections captured this sentiment, urging observers to embrace the quiet and listen closely.
On the interior the intention is to create a colourfield using lights, painting each piece of wood in a variety of colours.
