Siyanda stands, hands to her heart, in a state of quiet reflection. There’s a sense of contentment about her. “Together, human and nature, person and plant, are destined to grow – our fates intertwined,” writes Popper.
Siyanda, from the isiZulu for “we are growing”, is wrapped in vines and wearing a crown of plants. At her centre, there’s a rounded, empty space that symbolises continuity, wholeness and unity. The artist sees her as a representation of “our relationship with nature, its wild growth, our connection with it, and the journey we share.”
Originally installed at 1 Hotel in South Beach, Miami, Siyanda has since become a permanent fixture at Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival grounds in Okeechobee, Florida.
