Behind The Swamp
The Swamp has become a landmark on the MoDem island. Designed by Daniel Popper and affectionately dubbed Jolene by the MoDem crew, this sculpture exemplifies artistic innovation and deep thematic exploration.
Unveiled at the MoDem Festival in 2021, Jolene is a striking fusion of steel, fibreglass, and concrete. The sculpture features a female figure holding her face in front of her head like a mask, revealing a lush jungle of unspoken desires, hopes, and fears hidden within. This powerful visual metaphor echoes Carl Jung’s theories on the persona – a facade crafted to impress while concealing the true self.

The mask represents the persona, while the jungle inside symbolizes the raw, unfiltered aspects of the human psyche. This contrast encourages viewers to reflect on their own inner landscapes.
Jolene’s allure is further amplified by the captivating projection mapping that animates the sculpture after dark. This technique casts a kaleidoscopic glow over Jolene, enhancing its mysterious presence and evoking the subconscious mind. By combining light and form, projection mapping transforms Jolene into a dynamic artwork, offering distinct experiences by day and night.
We’re excited to announce that Daniel Popper is already working on a new design for The Swamp’s next iteration. The preliminary sketches promise even more inspiring elements and innovations. We eagerly await this next chapter and look forward to future editions.
